Remember the old Goofus and Gallant comic strips? Gallant always took the high road, helping grandmothers cross streets, carrying groceries for a neighbor and, in general, being the quintessential good kid. Goofus, well, didn’t. If he wasn’t causing trouble he was missing the mark somehow—forgetting to do his homework, oversleeping and intentionally or unintentionally causing mayhem wherever he went.
In the comics, good and bad were obvious, as was right and wrong, positive and negative, winners and losers. But in life—and especially in real estate investing—the difference between who excels and who falls behind isn’t always so cut and dry. Often there’s a thin line separating the most successful investors from the rest of the pack—a thin line that sets the winners apart from the rest.
I like to think of myself as a winner.
I work hard. I try even harder. I focus on my goals, visualize next steps and am relentlessly head-down until I cross the finish line. It’s what’s kept me on this forward-moving trajectory for the last decade and what, I’m confident, will keep me pushing ahead no matter what—when things get tough, when the economy dips and when, simply, things don’t go according to plan.
Let’s face it: in this industry do they ever?
But now the even bigger question: are you a winner? Can you dig down deep and do whatever it takes to get the job done? Are you self-confident, self-assured and true to yourself? And most importantly, are you constantly learning and evolving, striving to make yourself and your business better? Because in real estate investing, that’s what’s going to give you a leg up. That’s what’s going to position you as a winner, now and in the future. I want you to ask yourself the following questions:
AM I FOLLOWING MY PASSION?
Winners follow their path—and it’s a passion-driven one, from go. By allowing their interests, talents and passions to inform and inspire their personal and professional journeys, winners are better able to stay laser-focused on the task at hand, because they’re eager to roll up their sleeves and navigate whatever comes next.
Think about it: have you ever been forced to do something you truly hated? That back-breaking chore, the tedious assignment, the boring project? It feels like time stands still, doesn’t it? The seconds feels like minutes and the minutes like days. And, chances are, the work wasn’t your very best because you felt anything but inspired.
Now think about a time you were following your passion, and tackled something you were really excited about—a DIY project, let’s say, or a cool new project at work. Time flew by! Before you knew it, you were done, and the work was incredible because you gave it your all.
That’s the big difference—winners want to push themselves because they’re following their passions. They’re true to themselves, they know what they want and they set out to achieve it. And, without fail, they succeed.
DO I KNOW WHAT I WANT? AND DO I STAY FOCUSED ON ACHIEVING IT?
In that vein, it’s essential to know what you want—it’s virtually impossible to chart a course to success without being able to really visualize your goals. Winners think about their passions and what brings them true joy and fulfillment, and then they go after it with all the force and might in them. It’s powerful, it’s inspiring and it’s so results-driven that it’s virtually impossible to get thrown off course. You’re just that in it—in the headspace, in the moment and, in this case, in the experience of flipping properties.
I often talk about the Real Estate Investor Mindset, which weaves directly into this notion. Having a Real Estate Investor Mindset involves four steps. You’ve got to:
- See it
- Believe it
- Map it
- Execute it
Can you close your eyes and see that next flip, that huge payout and a life of true financial freedom, as if it were right there in front of you? And does it feel so real that you’re able to readily map out a plan to get there? To really achieve those unparalleled outcomes for yourself and your business?
Beyond that, do you stay true to yourself and become your own best advocate? Do you believe in yourself and your cause so much that you couldn’t possibly be knocked off course? And when naysayers stand in your way—people who question your new business venture or believe you can’t make money by flipping houses—do you stand tall, stand proud and stand up for yourself and your investment endeavours. I know I do. Because that’s what winners do.
DO I SEEK OUT OPPORTUNITIES TO KEEP LEARNING AND GROWING?
I’ve been investing in real estate for nearly 15 years. I’ve grown a multi-million dollar business flipping properties. I teach prospective investors how to make five, six and even seven figures investing in real estate. But, even so, I learn something new every single day. I can’t think of a day that I haven’t picked up a new bit of information or a meaningful insight that can help my business. I learn from everyone and everything—my students, sellers and buyers, colleagues, lenders, fellow investors, trade publications, you name it. And, more importantly, I seek out opportunities to learn, grow and evolve myself and my business.
Winners never stop learning. They embrace discovery and thrive on self-improvement. They never think they’ve reached the top, and constantly look for chances to achieve meaningful mastery of skills that inspire and enhance their work. And winners also learn from an unexpected source: their mistakes.
We all make mistakes especially when we’re diving into something new, like real estate investing. When things don’t go as planned or missteps happen, winners pick themselves up, dust themselves off and walk away with key learnings they can apply to future deals. If you let yourself get derailed by challenges, you aren’t going to get very far in this industry. Even the savviest and most skilled investors come up against some serious bumps in the road. Winners can move on and, even, be better for the experience.
At the Nick Vertucci Real Estate Academy (NVREA) we’re focused on turning new and prospective real estate investors into winners. Winners who can excel in this industry. Winners who will set the pace for everyone else. Winners who are able to find, fund and flip the very best deals with ease and confidence. And winners who know how to seek out opportunity, skill sets and insights, even if it takes smashing through a few hurdles to get there.
If you’re considering real estate investing or are already in the trenches, ask yourself these key questions and see where you land. Then sign up for an upcoming NVREA session or free seminar and see what it takes to get yourself to that next level—the winner’s circle.
