When I was 18 years old, I was living in my van—really. But I was young, ambitious and knew I was destined for more. With a solid, success-driven mindset, I started my journey, and ultimately built a name for myself that I was deeply proud of. It was an epic journey and, every step of the way, I learned more and more about myself and the power of mindset. By staying positive, razor-focused, results-driven and, above all, strategic, I could do anything.
Then the dotcom bubble burst—HARD.
In days everything I’d worked for was gone. The wealth I’d built and strategically invested—gone. The connections I’d forged through hard work and proven results—meaningless. All of my short- and long-term plans for myself, my business and my family—out the window, along with my powerhouse mindset.
But even though I wanted to give up, I had a young family to support. Beyond that, though, I had enough self-respect and self-confidence to understand that this wasn’t it for me—my story hadn’t been written just yet. Real estate investing entered my life at this very low point, when my head clearly wasn’t in the game. But I forced my hand and, slowly, started to bounce back. As I collected win after win flipping properties, the path started to feel brighter and more concrete. I could do this, not just now but forever. And, more importantly, I wanted to do this. I got a real thrill each time I spotted a deal and, again, when I got that deal flipped. It was exciting, it fed off of many of my strengths and it got me back on track quicker than I could have imagined. Suddenly, I was back in the game and had adopted an unwavering Real Estate Investor Mindset to match.
So let me start by saying this: wherever you are in your investor journey—whatever brought you to the table and to this article—I’ve been there. From the lowest lows to the highest highs, I’ve lived it, felt it and grown from it. Even if you’re feeling banged up by past experiences in business, investing or life, read on. Because, with the right mindset—a Real Estate Investor Mindset—you can do anything.
Understanding the Real Estate Investor Mindset
Often people consider real estate investing because they have one simple goal: to grow their wealth and financial freedom. It’s a great goal—it was my goal, for sure. But how do you get there? How do you put the pieces in play and stay the course long enough to see results? What has to happen now—and after that and after that—to keep building on your wins and, ultimately, to construct true financial freedom?
In short, it’s your mindset. The Real Estate Investor Mindset is everything in this industry. Think of it as one part savvy, strategic business leader and one part creative, passionate entrepreneur. You can close your eyes and see that goal, sitting out of reach andyou’ve got the know-how to put one foot in front of the other and actually get there. You’re inventive and you’re action-driven. You construct solid plans to get where you want to be, but can think outside the box when the need arises, deftly navigating any twist, turn or bump in the road that you hadn’t seen coming. It’s a little right brain, a little left brain and a total focus on the task at hand—the task of becoming a successful real estate investor.
4 Steps to Maintaining Your Mindset
While it’s clear the best investors have their heads in the game in a big way, I’m often asked what, specifically, constitutes a Real Estate Investor Mindset. So here goes—here’s what I focus on, even when things get bumpy:
1. I SEE it:
I can literally close my eyes and envision what I want. I see myself finding an amazing deal, locking it down and signing on the line—then I see myself hitting the jackpot when I finally flip the property. It’s so real I can practically feel the keys in my hand.
2. I BELIEVE it:
Now that the picture’s painted, I take a breath and remind myself that I CAN DO THIS. I believe it so much, that’s it real—and that confidence shows when I lob a counter offer or ask a lender for funds. Your brain is a very powerful muscle, and it can do anything. Believe it and you can achieve it.
3. I MAP it:
Believing it is key but, at the same time, nothing in this industry will ever just land on your lap. Success takes strategy and, ultimately, rolling up your sleeves and getting the job done. Once I see it and once I’m confident I’ll achieve it, I map out a path to success and get ready to get moving.
4. I EXECUTE it:
Now that I’ve planned the work I have to work the plan. It may sound intuitive, but I can’t tell you the number of seemingly solid investors who just stop. They see it, believe it and map it, then they don’t actually do anything about it. I don’t get it. Maybe they’re derailed by a “no” early on, or maybe they get cold feet. But I can’t stress this enough: you need to DO IT. You need to call and call and call until you get a “yes.” You need to find another property if you’re outbid for this one. You need to dig deeper and push harder and work towards your goals. Because that’s the hallmark of a Real Estate Investor Mindset—and that’s what’s going to separate the good from the great.
One final characteristic of the Real Estate Investor Mindset: you can never stop learning. I certainly haven’t. Not a day goes by that I don’t pick up some new skill, insight or piece of information I didn’t have before, often from an unexpected source.
